RAOUL DE TILLY.
Tilly is near Caen, where was located the castle and barony of which the lords of this name were castellans and was one of the most illustrious families in Normandy. Haymon de Telleia occurs in Normandy in 960. The castle was held in fee in 1165 by Henry de Tilly. Ralph de Tilly held lands in 1083 (Domesday) and his descendants continued until the time of Richard, Coeur de Lion, when they were seated in Wonford. During the reign of Stephen the greater part of the confiscated barony of Geoffry de Mandeville was granted to de Tilly, consisting of fifteen knights' fees, of which Mersewood, Dorset, was the chief seat. It was, however, regained by Robert de Mandeville in 1205. At the time of the conquest, Muscamp in Normandy was held by a branch of this family., Odo de Tilly granted lands to Troarn Abbey, Normandy, during the reign of Henry I, and appears to have obtained fiefs in Yorkshire, where his descendants long continued. Geoffrey de Wadworth in the time of Stephen, was father of Eudo de Tilly, called also Eudo de Wadworth. This Eudo held land from the barony of Pontefract in 1165, hence the family of Wordsworth, ancestors of the celebrated poet.
