Ivo de Vesci, with his brother Robert a tenant-in-chief, were both part of William the Conqueror’s expedition. Ivo de Vesci, after the conquest is known to have possessed nineteen lordships in the counties of Northampton, Warwick, Lincoln and Leicester. Ivo was presented with the hand of Alda, granddaughter of Gilbert Tyson, Lord of Alnwick. In 1096 Ivo erected the first parts of Alnwick castle to defend England's northern border against the Scottish invasions. Both Ivo and Robert were benefactors of St. Mary’s church in York.
