In this opening scene King Edward the Confessor can be seen giving instructions to his brother-in-law, Earl Harold, about a mission to Normandy. The mission was to confirm the promise of the crown to Duke William of Normandy, after Edward’s death. It was Harold’s intention to use this opportunity to try to arrange the release of his brother Wulfnoth and nephew Hakon who were being held hostage by William. Edward is shown wearing a crown and holding a floriated sceptre. He is seated on the throne and the scene is taking place in the Royal Palace of Westminster. Behind Harold stands Eadnoth. Eadnoth held office as royal justice.
