Archers fire on the English soldiers. One archer is shown wearing full armour and helmet. Clearly a man of means as only the wealthy could afford armour. Although the bow was a useful weapon for hunting, the Saxons did not regard the bow as an effective weapon of war. Alternatively, the Normans seem to have made good use of the bowman. The type of bow most likely in use at this time was the Danish short bow. This is evident by the method of drawing the bow to the chest as opposed to the ear, which is characteristic of the long bow. In the lower border appears a leopard and a fox. Both appear to have a goose in its mouth.
