The death of King Harold is portrayed in this scene as, according to legend, he is shot in the eye by an arrow.. The final death blow to Harold is delivered by a mounted Norman knight in the later part of this scene . His death occurred at 6 pm, on October 16th 1066. Harold’s banner ‘The Fighting Man’ has fallen but the man in front of Harold still carries the battle standard ‘The Dragon Banner’ of Wessex. The banner has a golden ‘wyvern’ embroidered on a black background, and is described as a two-legged, winged dragon with a barbed tail and one raised leg. It has a green head, green back, red chest, yellow tail, green legs, red belly and red on the inner wings.
