The massacre at Romney continues. This scene shows William taking revenge against the men of Romney. This ruthless act sent a very clear message to the people that resistance would be dealt with severely. From the time of Aethelred II, in 997 a mint existed at Romney. Wulfmaer the moneyer struck coins for Edward the Confessor with the Pacx issue in 1040. He also struck coins for King Harold, William the Conqueror and William II’s cross voided type between 1083 and 1086. The existence of a mint at Romney may have been another reason for William’s interest in the area. Two Centaurs can be seen in the upper border.
