This scene shows the election of Edgar Aetheling. Edgar was the Great Nephew of Edward the Confessor and was the recognized heir to the throne. Edgar, about 12 years old at the time, elected King of England by the Witan (council) after the death of King Harold. In early December Edgar’s supporters abandoned the uncrowned king in preference for William and so quietly set aside Edgar’s coronation. Edgar was well looked after by William and may have fought in the Crusades, 30 years later. Edgar’s sister Saint Margaret, canonized in 1250 by Pope Innocent IV, was married to Malcolm Cannmore.
