The final scene is the crowning ceremony of William the Conqueror, which takes place on Christmas Day 1066, in the Church of Saint Peters at Westminster Abbey. William attempted, though in vain, to learn English and so the coronation was conducted in both English and French. Ealdred, Archbishop of York conducted the ceremony in English and Geoffrey; Bishop of Coutances conducted it in French. Queen Matilda was not present at the coronation. Matildas coronation took place on Whitsunday in Winchester, 1068. According to Agnes Strickland, William chose to be re-crowned at the same time.
