Duke Richard I of Normandy built the Tower of Rouen in 996. It was a Palace-Prison, built where the Fierte St. Romain stands today. It was to this tower that Duke William had Earl Harold escorted to, upon his release from The Count of Ponthieu. Harold leaves the Castle of Beaurain with Count Guy to meet with William. Harold is unarmed and carries a hawk on his left arm. Rouen is the historical capital city of Normandy, once one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, the city of Rouen was the seat of the Exchequer of Normandy in the Middle Ages.
