This scene starts with the lookout welcoming the return of William. Inside Rouen palace William is shown seated on an ornate cushioned chair, holding his sword and listening to an address by Harold. Possibly, Harold is conveying a message from King Edward regarding his wish for William to take the throne after his death. The person behind William is Odo, Lord of Aumale. Odo took refuge at the court of William of Normandy, who was, as William de Jumieges informs us, his kinsman; and in due time married the Dukes half-sister Adeliza. His name appears in Lelands list as Aumarill.
