Conan escapes by rope from Dol. In reality Conan may well have been attacking the castle and may never have gained entry, however, at this point, he escapes from Dol and flees to Rennes. Conan II was the son of Count Alain III of Rennes. It was claimed that Alain was poisoned by Duke William and his accomplices. From the age of three Conans Uncle Eudes, Count of Penthièvre, held him in captivity at Rheims. Conans captivity lasted for seven years until his rescue in 1048. Sometime after the Siege of Mortemer in 1054, Conan captured his uncle Eudes and had him imprisoned and held in chains. Conan was succeeded by his sister Hawise.
