Conan flees and is pursued past the city of Rennes, capital of Brittany, by William and his army. The building pictured here represents the fortifications of the city surrounded by a palisade. Rennes is built on a hill, with the north side being more elevated than the south side. It is at the meeting point of two rivers: the Ille and the Vilaine. The eastern Armorican people of Redones founded Condate, an ancient Celtic word meaning confluent. In the Roman era, Condate became Condate Riedonum. In this scene we see the border of the tapestry penetrated for the first time by weapons from the main scene. Although sheep are shown grazing in this scene, the hill structure appears to be man-made.
