The pursuing forces now attack the fortifications of the city of Dinan, which Conan has occupied. The Bretons are attempting to stave off the Norman attack. Notice how the scene goes from attack to submission within the same scene. Dinan is a walled Breton town and a commune in the Côtes-d’Armor département, North Western France. It is one of France’s most attractive walled towns and part of the wall can still be walked around today. Its geographical setting is quite exceptional. Instead of nestling on the valley floor like Morlaix, most urban development has been on the hillside, overlooking the River Rance.
