After the battle at Dinan, William rewards Harold by giving him arms, in recognition of his services during the battle. Bestowing this honour on Harold required that Harold, in return, pledge allegiance to William. Harold made a number of promises to William. Not only does he promise William the crown of England, he also promises to marry William’s daughter as well as send his own sister to be married to one of William’s barons. Harold also promised to improve the fortifications at Dover. Notice how the sword extends from under the armour in this scene and how the scene is separated by a change of direction of the horses on either side.
