William’s ship the ‘Mora,’ was a magnificent ship presented to Duke William as a token of love from his wife, Queen Matilda. It has a lantern atop the mast, which was a means of signaling the rest of the fleet. On the stern of the ship, there is a carving. The carving is shown holding a gonfannon and blowing a horn. Airard Fitz Stephen commanded the ‘Mora’ which was undoubtedly the fastest ship in Duke William’s fleet. The man standing at the prow of the Mora is Gilbert de Nevil, the companion in arms of the Conqueror and styled by some genealogists ‘the Duke’s Admiral’.
