Harolds army reaches the town of Lincoln. The archway depicted in this scene is the north gate of Lincoln dating back to the 3rd century AD. It is the oldest Roman arch in the United Kingdom still used by traffic today. Newport Arch was damaged in 1964 by a goods lorry trying to pass under the low arch. It sustained minor damage in 2004 when it was, once again, hit by a truck. In Viking times Lincoln was important enough to issue coins from its own mint. After the establishment of Dane Law in 886, Lincoln became one of the five Boroughs in the East Midlands. Harvesting continues along the bottom border.
