The fleet continues down the coast, raiding and pillaging the towns along the way. Harold’s brother Tostig, joins forces with Hardrada at the mouth of the river Tyne. In 1055, Tostig became the Earl of Northumbria upon the death of Earl Siward. Tostig was never popular with the Northumbrian ruling class and according to the Vita Edwardi, had 'repressed the Northumbrians with the heavy yoke of his rule'. On 3 October 1065, the thegns of Yorkshire declared Tostig outlawed. Tostig took ship with his family and took refuge with his brother-in-law, Count Baldwin V. Baldwin provided him with a fleet and Tostig spent the summer of 1066 in Scotland with his sworn brother, King Malcolm III of Scotland.
