The attack on Scarborough begins. There is no mention of Scarborough in the Domesday survey, either because very little remained after Hardrada and his forces destroyed the town, or because it was a part of the manor of Falsgrave. Tostig was Earl of Falsgrave and Lord of the Manor of Hougun. At the time of the conquest, Falsgrave was the major settlement and the Manor of Falsgrave stretched from Staintondale in the north to Filey in the south. Today Falsgrave is a suburb of Scarborough.
