Askeaton Castle was founded by William de Burgo in 1199, it became the dwelling place of the Kings of Munster and is situated on an island in the River Deel. Parts of the castle was destroyed in 1652 to make it undefendable. An excellent instance of a motte-and-bailey castle, where the motte is of natural rock. The splendid keep and hall are of the 15th century, but there are two older towers, which might date from 1199.
The castle was abandoned to crown forces in 1580, its walls blown up by the fleeing Spanish defenders.
