This tower house on a cliff above the Owenboy River, one mile W. of Carigaline, was probably built by the FitzGeralds in 1439.
Evidence suggests that it was remodelled in the early 17c as a three storey L-plan stronghouse. It was held by the MacCarthys of Muskerry in the 16thc and in 1604 was granted to Sir George Carew. He sold it to Richard Boyle who in turn sold it to Edward Martel from whom the MacCarthys purchased it back, only to lose it again in the 1650's. It was in ruins by 1750 when it was restored by the Hodder family. It would appear to have undergone a modern restoration, and is now private residential accommodation.
The Castle is owner to several myths and ledgends.A painting of the famous 'White Horse' can be seen clearly on the cliffs underneath the castle.
