The tower house at Ballycullen appears to be an early construction c1430. It was built by John Mac Namara.

In 1580 the castle belonged to Shane MacNamara (son of Daniel Roe) and by the 19th century the castle was being used as constabulary station.

Ballycullen Castle has a ground floor and first floor room. There is also a secret room which can only be reached by a small climb up through the floor.
