Bryn Bras Castle is a located on the old road between Llanrug and Llanberis known locally as the Clegir road, in Caernarfon, Gwynedd.
This Grade II listed building was built by Thomas Hopper between 1829 and 1835
on the site of an earlier structure, the architect who also designed Penrhyn
Castle, for Thomas Williams, a Welsh speaking solicitor. The most famous owner
of the castle was Duncan Elliot Alves (1870-1947) whose name became synonymous
locally with sumptuous living. When I was young anyone looking for extra comforts
or sitting down on the job would be challenged with the words 'Who do you think
you are, Mr Alves'. Duncan Alves, however was a generous patron of local brass
bands and football teams.
The castle is more of country or stately home than a traditional Welsh Castle. The site of the first motorcycle Dragon rally in 1962, the house has been converted into luxury holiday apartments.
