On a point of land at the head of Roaring-Water bay are the extensive remains
of Kilcoe Castle. Built around 1450 by the Clan Dermod MacCarthy, lords of Clandermot,
it has always been one of the best preserved castles in West Cork.
The castle consists principally of a large massive square tower, with a small turret. In more recent times, the castle has been extensively restored by its present owners actor Jeremy Irons and his actress wife Sinéad Cusack.
The controversial colour wash that adorns the castle, has apparently been thoroughly
researched, and is considered authentic.
