Kininvie House is a Manor House in the Spey Valley near Rothes. It was originally
part of the Balquhain Leslies' estates, then purchased by the second son of
the Earl of Rothes (1936) and is now currently the home of Colonel David Leslie.
--THE HOUSE OF KININVIE stands upon the rivulet Fiddich on the east side, environed
with natural wood. A branch of the family of Lesly of Bal- quhan has enjoyed
this Barony about 250 years, and of this branch the Earl of Leven is descended.
James Leslie, Esq., holds the barony of Kininvie and the lands of Tullich, a valuation of 450 Scots, and resides in the manor house of Kininvie, the commodious habitation of his very remote ancestors.
The Leslies are cadets of the ancient line of the Rothes family. The property of Kininvie has been in their possession since an early period of the 16th century. A charter of the lands granted by John, 3rd Earl of Atholl, to Alexander Lesly is dated in 1521. The present pro- prietor derives his title through a daughter of that James de Tullich who built the portion of the House of Kininvie. This laird had a numerous family; and at his decease the property came in succession into the hand of two of his sons, James and Alexander Leslie, both of whom died without issue. The property then reverted to the family of his eldest daughter, Jane, who had married Robert Young of Monymusk their eldest son, Archibald, assuming the surname of Leslie, and succeeding to the Kininvie and Tullich estates in 1840. This gentleman dying in the following year, he was succeeded by his son, Mr. George A. Young Leslie, the present proprietor.
