Sir John Davies founded the village of Drumquin in 1617. He built castles at Kerlish and at Gavetagh, on the Derg, and between the two castles constructed an excellent road, seven miles in a straight line over mountains and bogs, which in several places still remains perfect. Castle Kirlish was formerly known as Castle Curlews.
