Newtown Castle, a 16th-century tower house, was built by the O'Briens and later became the property of the O'Loughlins (O'Lochlainns) - "Princes of the Burren". The O'Loughlin family were still in possesion of the castle at the end of the 19th century. The castle fell into ruin but in the 1990's the castle was restored and is now incorporation into the campus of the Burren College of Art.
