The battle rages on as the English defend themselves from the Norman attack. We now see a Norman knight dismounted, fighting in hand-to-hand combat with the English. Bodies litter the battlefield, but still the Saxons hold out against the Norman onslaught. ‘An Englishman who much annoyed the French was assaulting them with a keen edged hatchet. A knight struck him over the helmet, causing it to fall over his eyes; as he tried to raise it the knight cut off his hand. Another tried to seize the axe, but as he went to pick it up, an Englishman struck him, breaking all his bones, so that his entrails and lungs gushed forth.’ –Master Wace.
