Centwine of Wessex

Centwine was the king of Wessex from 676 until 685. Born in or before 643, he succeeded Aescwine as the son of Cynegils and the brother of Cenwalh. He is also the father of St Ermenburga, Abbess of Minster-in-Thanet in Kent, and there fore the grandfather of Sts Milburga (Abbess of Wenlock Priory), Mildred, and another sister who was also canonized. He won three notable battles over the Cornish, especially the one of 682, but Bede also notes a period of division in the Kingdom of Wessex, about which little is known. Some sources claim he died in 685, others that he abdicated and entered the priesthood.
